“Do the thing you fear most, and the death of fear is certain.”
- Mark Twain
Fear...the #1 Killer of having hope, faith, ambition, and much much more. We all know fear and we know it very well. For fear has taken advantage of all of us at some point in our lives. It comes without warning and without mercy, in good times and bad. It’s like a constant disease that you can catch easily if you are not strong enough to overcome it. Sometimes I think about the word “Fear”, what it really means, and what it has done to the world. You know, fear is what started the African-American Civil Rights Movement. When White people were so afraid to let other minorities rise and prosper, just like them, they denied themselves and others to live in harmony. Fear is what Mahatma Ghandi tried to eradicate when he took control of the Indian Independence movement. The British were fearful of the large Indian nation and what they could do to bring about change. Ghandi worked through his fear, and his people's fears to create and follow through with a non-violence movement. Fear is also what started the Holocaust and the perseverance of Adolf Hitler. Hitler and Germany were afraid of change itself and wanted to create their own type of people, “The Aryan Race”. This race was supposed to be a highly disciplined, pure, noble race, that really only included natural born Germans. So because they were afraid to bring together all people, from different backgrounds, with different languages, they created a war like no other that lasted for years. This war was filled with hate, selfishness, and most of all, fear of acceptance. These are the things I think about when I research “Fear” as a whole. From what I have seen, heard, and been through, it seems that fear destroys people. It destroys the ability to think clearly and rationally in an unknown situation that you are not prepared for. And if you let it follow you like a shadow, it breaks you down into nothing throwing you into an enclosed room with no way out. Creating a wall between you and all your aspirations to do better and be better.
I used to be so afraid of so many things growing up. For one, my mother, most importantly, because she was not playin’ around in discipline and respect. But also, life itself, and if I was ever going to be ready to take on whatever came my way. I often thought to myself “Will I get a good job? Go to college? Be famous or rich? Will I find a good husband? Have a nice home, and create a family? Will I be successful?” These thoughts ran through my mind on a daily basis. I have always been a deep thinker, but my thoughts run ramped when It’s about things I fear the most; the unknown. And why not be afraid of the unknown? This unknown is something you can never control or prepare for. Sadly, you can’t see what’s coming in the future, so many of us are already scared of what is to come, creating thoughts in our heads, good or bad, that create a long lasting fear. People always tell you to be fearless, victorious, and to always take on challenges to better yourself. But that is easier said than done, because fear is so apparent and free flowing, you can’t help but doubt yourself first before trying to be fearless in any situation. It’s hard to fight off something that consumes you and in all actuality is the easy way out of something; because to be afraid and weak is easier than to be fearless and strong.
If we aren’t careful, having too much fear and encouraging people to take the easy way out because they are scared could result in a huge decline in evolution. I say this meaning, a decline in our honorable leaders, scientists, mathematicians, astronauts, teachers, architects, Olympic winners, etc. You see, fear keeps us from evolving as humans. It keeps us from moving forward in life and achieving our goals. Fear is what keeps us from getting that promotion at work. We are too lazy and scared to try our best to see if we will actually get promoted because we think we are not worthy. Fear is what keeps us from finding true love in a partner because we think that once someone hurts our heart that there will be no one else out there to love us better. Fear is what keeps us from making that smart business deal to grow our business because we are afraid of dishing out money to make money. Fear is what keeps the hopeless romantic guy from proposing to the woman of his dreams because he is scared she will say no. Fear is why people can’t tell someone how they really feel about something because they are afraid they will hurt their feelings or seem like an ass hole, when really, all they are doing is being real and honest. Of course, many people can’t take the truth. They are not ready for it so they fear a reality check.
Now I ask myself, “When will be stop being afraid to make choices and embrace change?” Will bad things continue to happen because we are too afraid to make the right choices in life? Will we continue to keep ourselves from being successful because we think we don’t have what it takes? Or will we stop being cowards and start living our lives in the moment and embrace all that life throws at us. After all, life can not be controlled. It was never meant to be easy. But I do believe that FEAR was given to us, not for a negative purpose to keep us down, but for a positive purpose to help us overcome any obstacle. If we want something, we or more than able to go get it. We have the power to change our future by making our present work for us. Meaning, we have the ability to be great, we just have to be confident, be strong, and be FEARLESS. To be fearless means you can tackle any problem that comes your way. When fear tries to come and knock you down, instead of curling up into a ball, letting it consume you, try to see what positives could come from working past your fears. Once you see that there really “is nothing to fear, but FEAR itself”, you will be on your way to prosperity.
I think that FEAR’S worst enemy is FAITH. Because having faith in everything you do is the #1 killer of FEAR. Instead of being pessimistic and weary of life’s harsh blows, find yourself a happy place in FAITH. Start looking towards the future in a positive manner rather than a fearful one. If you have faith in yourself, you WILL get that promotion you always wanted, you WILL find true love, you WILL grow your business to be profitable, and the woman of your dreams WILL say yes to your proposal because she loves you just as much as you love her. Faith has a strong power than you can not see, but it’s definitely there, and it’s just as free flowing as fear is. I know that fear is powerful and it demands to be seen and heard, but don’t forget that you control your life. What you gain or lose from a situation is entirely up to you. Instead of making fear as the #1 killer, let’s start making fear the #1 loser, because we are better than FEAR when we have FAITH on our side.
